This version is called the “Style A Professional” and it was, indeed, professional in every way possible. Some history: In around early 1920s the Lyon & Healy Style A mandolin received asymmetrical body points, and a 13” scale length – which scale this has. There was apparently a separation in this area at one time, and there are still sections where the binding and the side do not join in a completely level fashion. There is area of binding, from the bass side point going upward to the area under the back of the neck heel that seems to have been, in the past, glued – and not cleanly.

These harps were popular with Suzuki teachers and others that taught young children and did not rely on extensive use of levers right away. The tone with the levers engaged is not great The levers can be removed from the harp, placed on a block, and hit with a hammer to tighten them. The handle is held to the lever with a rivet that can become loose and flop down. The levers have a sharp edge that can shave the string as the lever is flipped up. The sound is not particularly good and the levers have earned a bad reputation over the years. Every time a major change was made to the instruments the number was changed. This model was conceived as a training instrument for pedal harp students. I have several of these harps from the 1960s priced at $1200 each. Restrung in Concert Gauge nylon and regulated best possible. Lowest note C two octaves below middle C.
